Furniture Buying Tips

So many options, so many choices! How to find what’s right for you? Here are some simple tips to help you make a sound purchase that you won’t regret.

Tip #1
First, consider your needs, practicality and use of the item you are looking for, then list the features and functions you require in the piece you intend to buy.

Tip #2
Before setting out, measure your room and keep these dimensions with you when you are shopping.

Tip #3
Consider the furniture and décor that you currently have in your home and ask yourself if the new addition coordinates. Have fabric and color swatches of your walls and existing accessories with you to be sure that everything matches up to your liking.

Tip #4
Make a budget and stick with it – never over extend your finances. If you find a piece that seems too expensive, keep shopping. Not going with the most expensive piece doesn’t mean you won’t find something just as impressive at a better value.

Tip #5
Stay true to your personal style. Buy what you like, not necessarily what is currently trendy. Ask questions and do some research before buying. When in doubt, contact the manufacturer.

Upholstered Furniture

When buying upholstered furniture, the most important elements to consider are the frame, foundation, cushions and tailoring. Always look for a furniture piece with a metal or wood frame, eight-way hand tied or sinuous spring foundation, high density foam cushions and durable upholstery. These construction points help upholstered furniture pieces to stand up to wear – and extend the life of your purchase.

There are myriads of upholstered fabrics and covers available on the market and shopping for them can be fun and exciting. Look for great textures that look and feel amazing to really make your room come alive.

An important thing to keep in mind as you shop textures is that tighter weaves resist wear and are a good choice for active and high-traffic homes.

Leathers are among today’s most sought after furniture covers and are available in a wide range of colors and textures. Advancements in material handling and manufacturing have made leather and leather-like materials attractive and affordable.

Wood Furniture

Though traditionally solid woods have been synonymous with the highest quality, consumers should not shy away from composite woods or veneers. Composite woods are custom wood products that are valued for their strength and resistance to splitting. They are also flexible and can be shaped, providing endless design possibilities that sustain paint and veneers beautifully.

Composite woods are made from recycled materials, so they offer a sustainable option. In this day of “green” thinking, why should we tap into the resources of our natural forests to build furniture components that are just as nicely made with recycled boards?

Good wood furniture has a multi-step process for a beautiful, evenly finished patina. Doors and drawers should be carefully aligned so that from a distance, the lines of the front façade are uninterrupted, visibly uniform and pleasing to the eye.  Hardware should be solid, secure and strong enough to support the weight of the case.
